I know why our Library is the most important place in town, but do you?

As librarians, we know the value of our community services, and our patrons appreciate their importance as well. In the magazine Public Libraries Volume 50 Number 5, was an article by Julie Biando Edwards, Melissa S. Rauseo, and Kelley Rae Unger. that took a look at some of the specific ways in which libraries add value to our communities and serve as cultural centers for our patrons. They separated library services into five very broad categories:

Libraries as Community Builders
Libraries as community centers for diverse populations,
Libraries as centers for the arts.
Libraries as Universities.
Libraries as champions of youth.

I would like to share with you 21 Reasons why your library is the most important place in town.

Libraries as Community Builders

Libraries help revitalize struggling or depressed neighborhoods and down towns.
Libraries are important partners in sustainability.
Libraries' special collections grow out of specific community needs.
Archives preserve historic artifacts, oral histories, digital history projects, relevant to the community.
Libraries are places where people come to know themselves and their communities.
Libraries serve as catalysts for addressing social problems.
Libraries, which champion, promote, and reflect important democratic values,are a part of the community's political life.
Library buildings as architectural structures are culturally relevant.
Libraries provide important business resources, especially for small local businesses.

Libraries as Community Centers for Diverse Populations.

Libraries serve as the "people's University"
Libraries offer opportunities for remote access, making it possible for those who can't get to the library to still access the library's cultural and education offerings.
Libraries go beyond providing content to enabling patrons to create their own content.

Libraries teach teens important life skills
Free tutoring, homework help programs, and summer reading programs for kids and teens help bridge the economic divide that impacts students' academic performance.
Libraries are important partners in child development.

New Library Community Resource Center.

We are very excited for our new community library resource center facility! The ground breaking ceremony for the new library will be on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. Please join us for this momentous occasion! The first 400 kids to arrive will receive a special keepsake! We expect the facility to be 30,000 square feet. It will feature a children's library, learning labs, an awesome book sorting machine that your kids will love to watch in action, computers for kids, teens, and adults. There will be quiet reading/studying spaces, and a few collaboration rooms discussions, book clubs, computer training, and more! Thanks to everyone who made this day possible!

On-Shelf Holds

Hi everyone, We are "beta testing" a new service it is called on-shelf or available holds. Here's the run-down. Normally you can place a hold on something that this currently checked out. Then the library calls you when your item arrives.

We are expanding the service a bit. Now you can place a hold on items that are checked in and we will pull those items for you and give you a call when they are ready. We will work in an e-mail notification system for those who prefer e-mail contact with the library.

Some Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: If I place a hold on something that says it is checked in, when will it be ready for me?
A: We'll pull those items at library closing time and have them ready the following day, typically--however, wait for that call or e-mail message confirming it is ready so you don't waste your gas getting here only to find out it isn't ready for you yet.

Q: If someone puts a hold on the item at or around the same time I grabbed it off the shelf who gets it first?

A: The patron in the library may check out the item. The online hold will remain in effect until we are able to fill it.

Q: Why does the patron in the library get preference?

A: Because our system will not notify staff to pull the hold until closing time.

TRANSFER PHOTOS FROM CAMERA TO COMPUTER (Jan. 4th.): Tonight's workshop is the first of four workshops in this month's, "Digital Photos & Scrapbooks" series. Bring your camera & learn how to transfer digital photos from your camera to your computer. Once your photos are on your computer, you can then copy them to CDs/DVDs or flash drives. This workshop leads into next week's workshop entitled "Editing photos in Picasa."

EDITING PHOTOS IN PICASA (Jan. 11th.): During last week's workshop, you learned how to transfer digital photos from you camera to your computer and then copy them to Cds/DVDs or flash drives. This week, you will learn how to use FREE software called Picasa to remove red-eye effect, cover up blemishs, resize photos, & many other tricks.

Losing a spouse, partner, or significant other is one of the most painful and stressful experiences of a lifetime. Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can shorten and soften this journey of grief.

Jack Harrell

Jack Harrell, author of “Vernal Promises,” will present on his new book, “A Sense of Order and Other Stories,” Tom Kimball, Marketing Director of Signature Books will discuss the ins and outs of the publishing business.

Jack Harrell teaches English and creative writing at Brigham Young University-Idaho and co-edits the LDS literary journal Irreantum. He has published fiction and essays in Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, Manna, Words of Wisdom, Popular Music and Society, and the anthology Dispensation: Latter-Day Fiction. His novel, Vernal Promises, received the Marilyn Brown Novel Award from the Association for Mormon Letters, and of his short stories, “Calling and Election” won the 2007 Fiction Contest from Irreantum and “A Prophet’s Story” won the 2009 Brookie and D. K. Brown Fiction Contest from Sunstone.

Tom Kimball

Tom Kimball is a 15 year veteran of Utah publishing and book selling. He has been employed by Deseret Book, Benchmark Books, and Greg Kofford Books. He recently completed his duties as a board member of the Mormon History Association and the book review editor for the Journal of Mormon History. He is the author of Owning God, A Short Study of Mormon Book Collecting. Tom is presently the marketing director for Signature Books, a publisher based in Salt Lake City.

Ann Cannon

Ann, a columnist for the Deseret Morning News, has published a number of books for children and young adults, including a series of early readers featuring the adventures of two brothers called Pirate Pete and Pirate Joe. Her newest novel, The Chihuahua Chase, is set in Salt Lake City. For a complete list of Ann’s titles, please visit her website at http://www.aecannon.com/.

In addition to writing, Ann has taught children’s and young adults literature at Westminster College and Brigham Young University. She also works as a part-time bookseller at The King’s English Bookshop in Salt Lake City. She and her husband, Ken, have five sons.

Come to the library Thursday June 18, from 3:30 to 5:30 and learn to fold a paperback book into a work of art. Also help us create a display for the library. We hope to fold over 800 books for our hanging display. This activity is for patrons 10 and older, but if you think you can fold a book come and try, any age is welcome.

From the director: Please pardon our dust! You may have noticed some changes around the library the past few weeks as we've prepared for an upcoming renovation. Angus Construction was awarded contract to build new restrooms, a library commons area with plenty of seating, study tables, and wireless Internet access.

The Library will also have a community resource center (a computer lab) that will allow local residents to access e-government and library databases.

We will do our best to keep the public informed of any delayed opening or postponed programs. We ask for your continued cooperation as we work to improve your library!

The Uintah County Public Library’s Teen Advisory Group:
(TAG) is a group of teen’s ages 12-18 committed to helping the library. The TAG meets the first Monday of each month from 4:00-5:00 p.m. to help with the planning and implementation of teen programs, recommend materials for the library to purchase and talk about ways to make your library experience better. Don’t hesitate to talk to one of the TAG members if you have any ideas or suggestions for the library.
Mission Statement:The Mission of the Teen Advisory Group is to represent a positive teen force in the library, encourage teens to become life-long library users, to promote teen reading, teen programs, and teen participation in the library, and to assist the library both in developing and implementing programs which serve local teens and the community.

This free public reception will feature an awards ceremony, some excellent discussion of all things library, and great company!
The evening will begin with an opening social at 6:00p.m. at 6:30 p.m. we will begin presenting library centennial awards to individuals within our community who have helped shape what the Uintah County Library is today. Donna Jones Morris, Utah’s top librarian, and head of the Utah State Library will be on hand to present the awards.
Following the awards ceremony at 7:00 p.m. our keynote speaker, award winning author Jack Harrell (a Creative Writing instructor at BYU-Idaho) will speak about his arrival in the Uintah Basin, how it has shaped his life, the importance of libraries to creative minds.

Looking Back; Looking Forward
On April 15, 1908 the very first library in Vernal started with 3000 books. At the time the library was housed by in a building owned by the Dillman family on the west side of South Vernal Avenue. In 1909, the library upgraded its quarters to the old rock tithing building (this building can be seen at the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers museum in Vernal). The library was moved to various locations along Main Street in Vernal as more space was needed to meet the needs of the growing library collection. In 1948 the library enjoyed a stint in Vernal's Central School. In 1958, a library twenty by sixty feet was built at this location near the courthouse. It was enlarged in 1976 and in 1990. In 2008 we are currently planning a new library facility suitable to accommodate our community's growing library needs.

Fancy Nancy Tea Party

Saturday January 26, the Children's Library hosted Fancy Nancy tea party, 32 Mothers and Daughters. All the young ladies and Mothers dressed up in their best and had a tea party like no other. They learned manners, tips on how to be a Fancy Nancy, also fingernail painting. A drawing was held at the end for Fancy Nancy Books.

Spiderwick Book Club

Thursday November 29 — January 31 Children grades 3-6 joined us at the library for a book club and activity of reading from the Spiderwick books. We also have been doing a craft that relates to the book. We are going to try to get through the five books in the Spriderwick chronicles before the movie comes out in February. The Children who signed up for this activity have had a great time. Come in to the library and see what you have been missing.

Quilting @ the Library

We had a wonderful beginning quilt class Saturday January 12, here at the library. The turn out was great over 34 quilters taking part in a beginning quilters class. . Please join us Saturday February 9 for quilting @ the library.

Stars in the Garden is the quilt we will be making this year at the library. We will be making two star blocks each month for seven months , the center block is an appliqué called “The Garden”. Come and make the whole quilt or join us for just one or more of the classes. Get your pattern and instructions from the reference desk or call Melinda 789-0091 Patterns will be given out the month before the class. January star blocks are Cluster of stars and Eight pointed star #4. Bring your own sewing machine and quilting supplies. The second Friday and Saturday of every month

Fancy Nancy Tea Party @ the library

Join us January 26, all dressed up for a tea party with Fancy Nancy. Get out your best dress-up, hats, gloves, feather boa, make-up.
Mother and Daughters 5 to 9 years of age. Space is limited sign up required.

Books on the Go

Starting in January 2008, we will offer library services to homebound patrons, With help form the Golden Age Center Meals on Wheels, library items will be delivered and picked up from homebound patrons’ homes. Thanks go to the Library Board and Glenda Brown for creating this program, and to the Golden Age Center for being the wheels for our items. We look forward to serving our patrons who have not been able to enjoy library serves. Contact the Library if you have questions about this program.

Library to celebrate its 100th year

The Uintah County Library turns a hundred years old in 2008. In honor our centennial we are having a ‘year of celebration.’ We hope that you will join in the celebration by participating in themed activities, book clubs, guest speakers, kids crafts, special story time, and more will be held throughout the year. We hope that you will join us for some unique activities that will enlighten, entertain, and enrich your lives!
As the story goes, a ladies club held a play in 1908 to which they sold tickets. The proceeds from the ticket sales were used to establish a public book collection which became eventually became the Uintah County Library. While those original books have long been gone, the community spirit that launched the library still thrives in Uintah County. Please join us in charting out the future of the library!
Over the years the library has changed, for the better—we hope! One new change that you’ll see this year is that Monday-Thursday we will open one hour earlier. This will make our new hours: Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m.- 9:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday our hours will be 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m
